I dont think AI art should be considered art theft just because its too good at copying an artist’s artstyle. It is doing exactly what human artists do when taking references but a million million times more efficient. The argument that “AI art and human artists taking reference is different because humans cant replicate the reference material perfectly” is a really bad argument like why feel butthurt that AI can do something humans can’t? This reminds me of the dilehma of cars vs horses back in the industrial era where coachmen complain that cars aren’t fair because its copying how a horse-drawn carriage works but is motorizing it and making it accessible to everyone so they are losing their jobs and the argument they present is “oh no the big auto companies are gonna take over the entire world if we’re put out of our jobs!1!!1”. The fact that not everyone can ride horses is like how not everyone can make art but by using technology, you can simplify that skill to something everyone can learn how to do and integrate it into everyday life. Like okay many artists may lose their jobs but then again, that’s on them for not adapting to technology. AI art is here to stay, not just because its a natural step in human advancement but also because it provides more good than harm. Sure the traditional art industry might lose money but so much money will be saved by start-ups and businesses on costs for graphics and designs for example and it may serve as a better way decentralize art from something only a handful of people can do to something anyone can do only limited by their imaginations. Not everyone can draw a “Man eating a fish eating a man” for example but with AI art, you can just type that and it will make the art for you so the competition wont be from skill but from how well you can sample images and use diffusion algorithms kinda like how software designing is right now where you no longer have to make everything on your own. Only natural progression from here is to improve the AI to make it less funky and stop directly stealing elements from artist’s works thats all.
