That is in my opinion the most important point. Some see it as the grail and thus invest with no restraint into AI, making companies, countries follow suit.
But even if in the end some solutions to our problems are found thanks to it, when will that be and after how many sacrifices in ressources that could have instead benefitted us all or even addressed more pressing problems that already are reshaping our lives at large ?
I fear that we will forgo the most simple and effective solutions in search of a possible illusion, just to notice 30 years later that we haven't even started addressing the very problems we started this endeavor for, thus making them insurmountable.
If AI research as we do it currently was cheap, that would be a non-issue. But it isn't by a very very large margin.
