First of all, I am no Tesla hater, but someone who studies and works in this field.
By design, Tesla’s robotaxi cars can essentially never reach what waymo theoretically could. Why? Because Tesla relies only on camera systems, which means they cannot properly see distance or properly see around the car in poor conditions (fog, sun directly ahead, etc.). Yes, they achieved more than some would consider possible with cameras alone, but there is undeniably a ceiling to what they can do.
As I am sure you may know, Tesla has safety drivers in most of their robotaxis btw.
And one more thing, waymo doesn’t really use sonar in the true sense of the word, mostly just the ultrasonic parking sensors for navigating very tight spaces and covering blindspots that are very close to the car.
