If AI was being developed by only the most trustworthy, noble people, with the best possible intentions and care, superintelligent AI would still drive us extinct.
The technology to correlate what kind of lab a superhuman AI pops out of with what that AI ends up doing simply does not exist.
The profit motive makes everything worse, but the most fundamental problem is not who gets to make the rules, but that _no one gets to make the rules._ Modern AI is grown rather than written, and the world's leading experts in understanding what is going on inside of these systems say they understand _maybe_ 5% today.
