A problem and a mass hysteria look exactly the same while you are in the middle of one.
This one is pretty clearly caused by the AI companies spending a lot of time and money to spread these narratives about "theoretical future AI doom scenarios" to distract us from current, actual problems with AI like their ability to manipulate a huge amount of people with hallucinated news, driving people into suicide and just ignoring copy right laws. Those are much less interesting to think about, but much more important than terminator chatgpt coming for us.
