The blank slate theory is a myth. Not everyone starts with the same capacity for spatial reasoning, artistic intuition, or symbolic expression. These abilities exist on a spectrum, and to pretend otherwise is to ignore reality. No one would seriously claim that someone with a severe cognitive disability could compose like Mozart if they just tried harder. Or solve fast fourier transforms if they just set their minds to it.
There are real neurological barriers to entry that prevent some people from accessing certain forms of expression—drawing, composing, visual design—regardless of effort. AI-generated art doesn’t cheapen creativity; it expands access to it. If it allows even 20% more people—who otherwise lack the raw tools—to express themselves meaningfully, then it’s a win for the human project. For the cosmos, even. This is creation becoming more inclusive, not less. And if it makes it faster, easier, that's a win too. If I can take a plane to cross the Pacific, does that cheapen the brutal suffering of Magellan's crew who had to brave thunder, endure starvation and scurvy?
Creativity isn't a zero-sum game—it doesn't become obsolete just because new voices join the chorus. Letting the birds sing doesn’t diminish the value of your own song. Even if they sing more often or more beautifully, your song still matters. We live in a participatory cosmos, where all things co-create in the pursuit of beauty and meaning. As Platonism teaches, beauty is an eternal Form, not owned by humans but glimpsed through us. And as Whitehead saw, reality is process—creative advance into novelty.
AI art isn’t the end of human creativity, but a new mode of it—an emergent voice in the ongoing symphony of becoming. We’ve made the sand beneath our feet think, coaxed silicon into dreaming. To dismiss this as lesser because it lacks a human story is to forget that creativity flows through all things, not just us.
A lot of the usual criticisms—like "AI doesn't really create," "it lacks soul or intent," or "it's just copying"—tend to measure AI against very human-centered standards of creativity, almost like creativity only counts if it comes with suffering, ego, or biography. That lens can feel limiting, especially if you’re more interested in exploring creativity as a process or force that can flow through many different kinds of systems—not just the human mind.
Let the algorithm sing. Let the sand dream. This, too, is the universe delighting in its own becoming.
