Even ChatGPT's claim of making up the sources isn't reliable. There was a professor in Texas who tried using ChatGPT to check his students' work. It wrongly flagged their work as generated by ChatGPT. One responded by asking ChatGPT if it wrote the professor's dissertation. ChatGPT then claimed to have written the dissertation (even though the dissertation was written prior to ChatGPT's creation).
