This specific company wants to do warehouse-to-warehouse shipping, so presumably someone at the warehouse does. This kind of shipping, where there is a specific route followed, between two locations entirely under the control of the customer, will be automated first in trucking. As a trucker myself, I know there are going to be issues that cause a bunch of these companies to go out of business, eventually. What do you do when the construction workers can't get a line completely erased in the roadway and your trucks follow the old line directly into a construction barrier? You've killed someone, or multiple people, and you don't even have someone on-site to answer preliminary questions. What about snow? (this is the main reason Texas is targeted instead of, say, North Dakota) It will cover the roadway, obscuring, or totally hiding the lines, reflectors, and even the edge of the pavement. When does the AI decide that conditions are too poor to continue driving? Can it settle for "stop on the side of the feeder because all my other options are worse"? Or will it cause a wreck on ice trying to get to the "safe haven" nearby. Conditions are endless. Humans can infer rational decisions from past data, but the AIs used to operate these things are exactly the opposite. They fail, continuously, predictably, and unpredictably, whenever new situations arise. A very small number of jobs will be lost at first. When these companies start to scale up, they'll run into all kinds of issues (like waymo being incredibly hated because the safest, and default, response to bad data is to "stop in the middle of the road." Which people don't like.) and there will be massive pull-backs from everyone. Significant job and wage losses across the industry won't happen for quite a while. The earliest could be something like 20 years from now, but more likely is 30 or so years away.
