From what I can tell, it's mostly the older-style artists (including digital art, which has somehow now also become traditional even though it's incredibly new in the scheme of things) who have their identity wrapped up in what they produce.
The creation of Ai at this stage mostly revolves around people having fun with it (and it is fun), not because of prestige or status.
