He warned about AI for years, and to be fair at least he still does. But he gave up before properly trying to prevent it from being created. It's like he forgot that government regulation is possible and international treaties are possible, And like any egomaniac he decided that it would be better if he's at the helm of the sinking ship.
Musk is a weird one, though, and a distraction from the actual leading experts in the field, most of whom are very concerned.
