I am shocked how many people find it hard to understand the difference between a manufacturing economy and a service economy. By making better machines you replace people doing manual labor: harvest, plowing, cleaning, factory conveyer belt handling etc. Those people lose their jobs because machines do it better and produce more. That is good, because people become free to do service jobs. Service jobs means you have more painters, architects, movie stars, musicians, software developers. People that provide services to other people. It is completely different when you replace those. You are not raising productivity for society, you are raising productivity for a company/one person only. No new jobs get created by getting rid of writers by having AI do it. It is not the same when you free peoples time from having to work the fields and dig the land or do other boring repetitive tasks. Most jobs today do not need to exist per say, humans could produce food, housing and amenities if only a fraction of people work. The rest are there so we can have luxuries like thousands of new movies a year, millions and millions of books, and almost endless youtube videos and blog posts on the internet. Replace those with LLMs and Video Gen AI, and you have replaced literally people. We did not replace people before, we were replacing human manufacturing, literal human physical labor. This is an extremely different case. AI is a very different beast from previous human inventions. Not that AI is good enough to replace humans, but even if only replaces a couple thousand this year… is that truly good? Is this not just the beginning of a really bad path?
