The difference between photoshopping a celebrity's head onto another persons body and using deepfakes are moral and legal ramifications. Deepfakes are almost indistinguishable from the actual adult industry and even though they are the product of artificial intelligence have multiple issues.
One issue with training a deep fake model and profiting off of another persons likeness is this is done without the target's knowledge and consent. The problems stems from idea if a person has the right to their own likeness and identity and therefore the right to deepfakes of themselves.
The US law has mostly not caught up to legal issues with deepfakes. California has banned deepfakes to influence elections, Virginia has banned deep fakes for all adult industries, and California has banned it for non consensual use.
Whether you agree it is morally acceptable or not is not does not take away from the consequences of an unregulated deepfake industry.
