I wish more people would conduct these sorts of private experiments with LLMs. Their limitations and the false promises implicit in how these tools are marketed become immediately obvious once you ask them to explain something in a problem domain that you already have a bit of mastery over.
I think most people use LLM services to explore concepts they don't already know well or aren't confident in, but whether it's chess, maths, programming, creative writing, fact recollection and synthesis, troubleshooting mechanical problems in depth, parsing and evaluating complex formal logic.. they're generally unimpressive and effectively incapable. Or rather they're the wrong tool for the job, but nobody's being honest about what generative AI is and is not so those wrong tools are being shoehorned into way too many things.
