Most tech actually does come out of solutions to real-world problems. The internet itself is a set of protocols to ensure gov't & military communications could survive nuclear or natural disasters. Biotech is designed to improve healthcare outcomes, fintech ostensibly aims for improved financial operations (both need regulations 😊).
This is a grift, though. The tech costs only make sense if you can totally eliminate human labor, which is not possible now, nor ever, with LLM-based tech.
