I think the idea stems from the fact that we want smarter and smarter robots/AI and at some point they might try to imitate consciousness or have so much knowledge that they start to contemplate their own existence. However, we wouldn't be able to tell if it was just imitating consciousness or if it really was conscious. Bases all the movies surrounding the subject lets just not ever make AI or robots with free will or thought. That seems to be the safest plan.
