It all comes down to societal expectations. Retirees are not expected to work, so there is no loss of self respect. If AI puts an extra 10% of people out of work, I think they will have a loss of self respect even with UBI. But if 60% of people are put out of work from AI, I don't think this would be the case. So many people would be unemployed that it wouldn't cause the same level of embarrassment.
I like UBI, but I also don't think it is enough. If AI ends up not being mostly hype, we should also be reducing the work week and retirement age. If we were to go from a 60% worker participation rate to 20%, the best best scenario would be moving to a 30 hour work week and setting retirement age to 45. Then you can still have 90+% of people participate in the economy during their life and enjoy a much longer period of leisure throughout that life.
