@olivercharles2930 How would consciousness exist if not in living beings? It is inherently built into life so that we can reproduce to continue our species, as the more advanced the consciousness the better chance for reproduction, with diminishing returns, so it serves a function in that way. Going further beyond that point, it very likely also exists so that life can even be what it is now, and function like it does now. Without it cells might not even have a purpose, therefore, if they lacked consciousness they might not even do the basic functions needed to create other beings, or for allowing beings to be able to even function at all like with movement, breathing, or likely to be able to even exist, as I've said, because they would of never formed into a mass of cells that created an animal, bug, plant, etc. to begin with. What purpose does an AI have? On its own, nothing. Computer parts are nothing more than metals, silicon, copper, rubber, cobalt, etc., and AI related components are made of similar parts. None of these parts contain living cells. Are you to tell me a metal is conscious? Of course not, it is an inanimate object. AI is no different. It is just a number of inanimate objects put together to form a technology, with electricity traveling through at various points to transmit data. Even an AI "brain" is still different from a real brain, in that it still contains no living cells, so it therefore has no way of having cell death or damage, meaning no suffering and/or, again, death in general involved. It does not need consciousness. An inanimate object does not have a purpose other than to just be, unless you give it purpose beyond that, i.e. by turning it into a tool, but creating consciousness from an inanimate object(s) is likely impossible. I think AI could have something similar to consciousness, in the sense that it can compute, process, and make decisions on its own accord by analyzing the existing world around it, but they are still not living, and not truly self-aware. Like with how androids are very close to human, but not, I see it in the same way with their "consciousness". They're very close to consciousness, but not. An android will never be human, or any other animal for that matter, so in the same sense an android will never be conscious. They're just super computers/really well written programs/scripts. I know a lot of scientists argue are we even conscious, but I personally believe those beliefs are false and that yes, we are conscious, self-aware, and do indeed exist. That part can be "opinion", but I don't believe in such ideas. Perception of reality can be changed, but I very much do believe what we are seeing is real and exists. It of course can change from person to person, but the basic foundation of everything, and a large portion past that, is all objective in its existence and form in which it exists. Even if we don't see something in its true form, that doesn't change what it objectively exists as.
On the other hand, is there still a chance they could become truly conscious without the merging of living cells and I am wrong? Yes, but I personally do not believe that to be the case. I am Agnostic, and I personally lean more towards life being beyond what we even know, and possibly beyond what we could ever even comprehend in this life. I don't think non-living materials can ever be conscious without legitimate life being involved in the creation, under any circumstances. What I believe is not objective in itself though, as existence is what it is, so again, there is a chance I am wrong, I just do not believe it to be the case.
