A company sold a bunch of AI enabled cameras to the Baltimore school system. The cameras were supposed to look for guns. The system has so many false alarms that a human is supposed to vet each alarm. One day the guy monitoring the system had an intestinal bug and spent more time in the bathroom than usual. The system alerted and then timed out. It sent Baltimore police to a high school because a bag of potato chips came up as a gun. Fortunately, the seargent in charge didn’t have any faith in the AI and didn’t even bother to draw his weapon. Otherwise, 5 kids would have died over a bag of chips. AI is not ready for prime time.
