I think Charlie's opinion (and most of the comment section) is based in a lack of understanding of the capabilities of more sophisticated tools. People play around with Midjourney, Bard, or the other countless copycats out there that simply offer a prompt box and the result you get is the result you get. However there are other tools that have much much much more control over what is generated and how it is generated and with that comes a much higher level of required technical skill. Stable Diffusion for example does allow you to just type in a prompt and get a result but it also allows you to not only change what model is used to generate it but allows you to blend multiple models together, it allows you to create your own model, it allows you to do inpainting which is where you can paint on a generated image to regenerate only the painted area or vise versa, and you can control things such as: steps, sampler, CFG, noise strength, seeds, scheduling, etc. To use the Camera analogy Midjourney and Bard are like using a disposable camera given away at a wedding where Stable Diffusion is more like a Fujifilm X100V. Sure in theory anyone could pick up a X100V and take pictures but there is a massive amount of technical knowledge, skill, and expression that goes into creating anything worthy of being called art. Similarly I could give someone a fresh install of Stable Diffusion and 99% of people would not be able to generate an image even remotely capable of being called art much less generating anything with any sort of accuracy towards what they were envisioning. Continuing on with this analogy just as in photography the general public that will consume the art cannot tell why one is superior to the other because they don't understand all of the little intricacies that it took to get that one perfect shot in the same way that most people will not know the effort that went in to me fixing my piece that generated with 6 fingers on a hand, eyes that didn't generate in the same colour, created floating stairs that lead to nothing, or the other thousands of variables that I've had to learn how to control, modify, and account for when creating something.
