As an artist myself, I understand why so many of us hate AI. It is a cheap move made by cooperations, and an insulting imitation of our hours of hard work and years of experience. Yet, I do believe that AI can be a beneficial tool for artists and world builders in the near future.
I myself have used AI as inspiration for some of my work and as a quick visualization for environments in my TTRPGs. But to publish or profit off of these images is another thing entirely.
The best course of action for the developers of these softwares is to rebuild their systems using ONLY creative commons and public domain images. As you said, art has been here since the beginning of time, and almost every work created before the 1960s is considered public domain.
If we as creators must coexist with these artificial “artists,” then these things must obey copyright laws like the rest of us.
