This may be a little controversial but here are my thoughts:
1) AI like people, draw inspiration from the world around us much like an artist roams the streets looking at other peoples creations or goes to galleries, so its a tad bit unrealistic to completely demonize the process used to train AI. I think we do have to consider that if we make developers pay to train AI will soon result in a world where an artist will have to pay to create art that even remotely resembles any other existing creation(structures, people, other artworks...)
2) Think of developers of these AI art generators as creatives that didn't have the ability to create the way normal artists do so they use the strengths to get somewhere close through the AIs they develop.
3) A lot of work is put into developing an AI so expecting them to be free to use is unrealistic, the developers are just trying to make a living too🤷🏼♂️ and remember alot of work is put into learning how and creating these AI.
Side not, crediting artists is a great idea and just to add to that I think artists could work with developer to create learning material for these AI and get paid for it as well as from the subsequent sale of any art created by the AI.
