If the AI remains regulated, it would do exactly what it was designed to do, which is keep humans away from harm by fighting wars for them. If the AI is implemented poorly or not kept check, these systems could indeed have unintended consequences. Perhaps an alternative might be having robots remotely controlled by human operators; however, the prospect of the superhuman capabilities that AI promises would likely be very attractive to governments wishing to gain the upper-hand in warfare, and thus the, "RC soldiers" would only serve as a temporary solution to the issue due to their inferior skill.
Case and point: we're screwed.
