The future isn't 5,000 pound autonomous private vehicles. The future is widely used and frequent public transportation (which could utilize the same waymo tech, but just not for individual cars).
The inefficiency of a private, 5,000 pound vehicles is so egregiously bad that it is slowly bankrupting our entire nation even while it destroys our environment and social cohesion. Self driving cars will probably be safer than human drivers in fairly short order. But that is a technical problem that is being solved. The social and environmental ills that stem from private vehicles isn't a technical problem and will not be solved by this tech. In many ways it will only get worse as more and more people lose good jobs to these cars while they dead head around the city and suburbs looking for clients. And the sprawl they are going to engender will be the financial ruin of many regions of this country.
Hardly the exciting time for transportation heralded in this video. Instead it is going to be a bunch of tech bro's congratulating themselves and then in 30 years we will all be asking ourselves why we didn't know better than to go down this path.
