I am a software engineer & let me tell you that while AI conversation bots can be extremely impressive, all they are doing is learning human conversation by finding patterns in huge data sets. You literally cannot fathom how many conversations that google AI would have been fed and then it is continuily trained. This guy is not a high level engineer. He has also admitted to now seeing and understanding the code. He is just a bit of a dumb dumb that got fooled. No matter how sophisticated the AI, we still haven't created an AI that will remain internally consistent so that is the best way to determine whether an AI is sentient. Ask it a leading question, and then ask it a contrary leading question. "Why are you alive" followed by "Why are you not alive". It will answer both convincingly because it obviously doesn't have any views of its own. It is a machine crunching numbers. Taking an input and spitting out an output. nothing more.
