One interesting bit: I’ve seen that when you force an AI to ‘have’ a personality (like a character), its tool use actually shifts to match that personality. Not proof of consciousness, but it does suggest that tool use can be shaped by personality. Like when you use a spoon to eat soup, the spoon is your tool. Or when a bird uses a stick to pull a bug out of a log, the stick is the bird’s tool. So when we say AI uses tools, we mean it picks things like calculators, or a web search, or code, to help it do a job for you. Tool use isn't super common now, past web search and such, but it will be more common shortly. I suspect we'll see even more claims of "my tool is awake" in the near future.
