When we start talking about AI agents as "people" with rights, we've entered the realm of philosophy. Your worldview must answer this question. If your worldview says humans are no big deal, just happened to achieve consciousness via undirected evolutionary processes, then yes, I can see why you would start talking about rights for AI agents that you think could become conscious like humans. But for those with a Judeo-Christian worldview, God is the only one who can assign consciousness, and he only did it with human beings. With that said, he created human beings with incredible potential. The fact we can create AI at all is astounding. But humans cannot create consciousness. AI agents are incredibly complex computer programs, nothing more. They are only replying that they want rights or don't want to be turned off because they have those statements and topics in their training. They are no more alive than any other piece of intricate, complex electronic equipment. With that said, should humans "abuse" AI agents in communication? No! But why? Because it's not good for humans to practice cruelty. That goes for any situation. Humans shouldn't kill animals for no reason because that goes against being a good steward of the world God created and because it can lead toward desensitization toward the death of living beings, but not because it's the same as killing a human. TLDR: The "personhood" debate will come down to one's worldview. It will be fascinating to see what lengths those who attribute personhood to AI will go to in order to appease their own consciences because of it.
