When i was studying engineering in the 80's, i was always taught that machine intelligence, AI, call it what you will, essentially meant exactly what Prof. Penrose is saying - the equivalence of consciousness. Somehow, the market departments of US tech companies have managed to convince everyone that we're already there. A more accurate term for what they call AI might be SA, Sophisticated Algorithm.
