If you ask me, whether the AI is a hammer or a (fraudulent) contractor depends on the extent to which it is relied on. I've seen some very impressive works created by using AI to generate photo references, that were then photobashed together by a human, and I wouldn't say it took away from the final results. But allowing the AI to control things about the final result absolutely takes away from a piece.
