Why artists don't like AI is because they fear what outcompetes them. They've been hit with the reality check that no one is irreplaceable, and that their skills don't actually make them special. This may just be my observation, but they're also a lot more emotional than the average person, and use more emotional reasoning, so of course they'll hate emotionless machines doing what they do, but better. I've also noticed they often wish to "pull the ladder up behind them" and want others struggle the way they did to learn art, and AI bypasses this.
20 I love the honesty here. There's really no shame in admitting this, but plenty of artists still call AI art "slop" which is insane.
29 I wouldn't blame AI for those layoffs, we've recently seen numerous flops in gaming, and product failures lead to layoffs. Have you heard of the disaster that was Concord?
20 This is where we get into the nitty gritty of it. It's only legally "theft" if they sell the original images, but they don't, the nature of AI images is transformative, with no duplicate images ever made out of training data. If you want to talk about art theft, look no further than the copy and paste commands on every modern computer, and how Google gives you free copies of copyrighted content daily.
10 This is what Adobe Firefly did, using only licensed works, but people still complained about it.
18 I promise there are traditional artists who feel the opposite way about digital art, and would say it's too easy and doesn't require enough skill. They don't even view it as art, just an image file without substance. If ErgoJosh's opinion and experience is anything to go off of, most people take digital art less seriously than traditional art, as they just don't understand it as well.
23 I've gotta mostly disagree. You're speaking from a position of incredible convenience. With digital art, you can quite literally play around with layers, warp them, delete them, shift them around, adjust coloring and shading, use the undo button, adjust zoom, and so on. The only thing in common might as well be the "mark by mark" process, but even then you can literally import files to digital canvases, so that's not even true.
05 I think you oversell how appreciative of art the average person is, especially in the age of photography. While you as an artist can appreciate every detail, and wonder why certain artistic choices were made, the average person is essentially thinking "Pretty image, I like it." and now that AI is so powerful, they look at it for the same reason. If they didn't, AI art would've been dead on arrival due to lack of interest.
36 Given that movies are also scripted, and most people like movies despite that, I would see no issue with scripted YouTube videos as long as the YouTuber isn't blatantly false advertising it as otherwise. This breaks down the analogy because AI isn't false advertising as "real" art. If a YouTuber was purely AI, I'd be fascinated at how a computer has so successfully imitated a human being.
