I love how the AI discussion as a whole is forcing us to ask ourselves what it means to be human. Our technologies have developed to feed us, protect us, move us, and now we’re asking what’s left after they can think for us. Speaking as a musician, one thing our technology cannot do is express for us. AI can play a song, but it cannot sing “happy birthday” to a beloved family member on our behalf. An AI work of art can be objectively beautiful, but it cannot express the life experience a human artist puts into their work. My optimistic take— once AI can think for us, we will be free to BE because we won’t have to DO so much to survive.
