Self driving cars could have the entire construction and parts placement rearranged so that the front of the car could withstand massive impact. A better option could be to just drive into the obstruction with the expectation that the impact would be sufficiently absorbed, since a self driving car would never go over the speed limit and the heavy object in question is already in motion, favoring the impact.
