I would argue that seeing judging people by their economic value is not the best way to judge their worth. The person earning a million a year isn't automatically a better person in every way than the person earning ten thousand a year. Yet people are being judged this way. There were great artists who weren't very well off during their lives, but today their work can sell for millions. We've traditionally considered nurses as people who are doing an extremely highly valued job, but we can't give them in monetary terms what they are worth so we say they have a calling and that makes it feel better. It doesn't help them pay the bills but it help us accept the situation. We have Elon Musk predicting a world where money will be meaningless while deciding he needs to be paid a trillion dollars. I am thinking that mass produced products might be of less value to us than artisanal products and yet in an AI utopia we might have more people able to make artisanal products and have the joy of making things with their own hands instead of working in a factory where robots make the products, or in many countries working in the distribution network for robot-made products. And I hope whatever economic system emerges will value those artisan products and similar things and not have a system where one person in a million is earning a trillion dollars while the rest lose their jobs and have to scrabble in the dirt and not have any way to pay the robot surgeon when their appendix bursts. I hope i am wrong but right now I can see that future playing out and some people taking themselves off grid and doing artisan things with like minded people and living in communities where AI is maybe even banned, while the masses are in a dystopian AI dominated world, a world run by AI for AI and the trillionaires who were in the right place at the right time to start up an AI company.
