I used to work in the self-driving industry as a software engineer (not at Tesla, but a competitor). Internally, we all felt Tesla was (is) doing horribly stupid things. They sold a bunch of cars with cameras, and when the industry realized lidar and radar were critical to the near-term success of AVs, they decided they didn't want to retrofit cars they had already sold with $15K worth of hardware.
