I watch my grandma cycle through this constantly. As she ages, she goes more within herself & she relives every past thing that made her feel shame or guilt over and over again. It's this strange process of watching her go into sheer despair/embarrassment/shame where there might even been literal cries out like: "Oh no!" And her eyes will glaze over with pure humilation/embarrassment/despair. It's really sad to witness. And then, what always follows is anger and/or rage. I can tell that she feels guilt, such deep despairing shame and guilt almost too much to bear, & then her mind reconciles that with: "They deserved it. It wasn't my fault. Don't blame me." Then, cue the anger and rage at the same person/event she intially feeling shame and/or guilt about. So, she "heals" the shame with rage. And she she does this over and over and over again every minute of every hour of every day. It's a perpetual cycle...shame - rage - shame - rage - shame - rage. Constantly. It's like she's either got to be mad st herself or mad at them. And she can never truly reconcile it. Either she's bad or they're bad. No attention to nuance. And no compassion for either herself or whoever else is part of that inner replay of a past event. It's really tragic. I've tried to help her work through it and she won't let me. The rage turns on me. She's a covert narcissist.
