We should not be allowed to use people's likeness or content to generate anything nor to be part of a dataset to train an AI without their explicit consent, and such consent should be requested under set standards. I'm no lawyer so it isn't perfect, but these are the kinds of regulations I want to see for AI- some of the things I've seen and heard people use it for is genuinely awful.
I originally thought it was just that the law hadn't caught up with the technological development of and the discussion around the ethics of generative AI yet. I didn't know that there was already some legal structure around the subject and they just found loopholes by calling it 'research' and then commercializing it when it was ready enough. I think that alone should be grounds to retroactively charge these companies data laundering and making generative AI, as they've intentionally skirted around the rules to exploit people's work and likeness for money.
It's interesting to see such a lack of empathy towards people when it comes to generative AI. It's sad that somewhere along the way, many have stopped caring about what's gone into even the most expressive and individual kinds of work and content, caring only for the final product and it's utility to their own selfish needs and desires (reeks of capitalism). That apathy and the sentiment of accepting the inevitability of AI is also ironic, considering that the very goal of AI is to do what we can do but better-
Like how you said at 4:23 "To the large corporations and businesses behind AI, the perfect world would mean one where there doesn't need to be a middleman. There doesn't need to be an artist." People don't realize that companies would absolutely love to replace "artist" in that excerpt with as many professions as they can; middlemen like human workers are just inefficient and bad for profit as compared to machines and AI. If you think about this all, there comes a point where AI and Capitalism are simply incompatible, and the inevitability of AI makes this a very pressing matter. I don't think it's really fearmongering either, as again these ideas of AI being able to do what we can do are baked into the very goals of AI's development.
AI can have huge benefits for society, however we need to be careful not only of how we construct the AI, but also of how it fits or doesn't fit with the world we bring it into. Lets be kind to each other as we enjoy what very well may be the end of an era.
