Torontonian here. I was at Fan Expo Toronto in 2024 after having not been there in about seven years and I VERY quickly noticed all of the ‘off’ artwork both in Artist’s Alley and in other big ‘art’ booths elsewhere at the show. And visitors were just forking over money without hesitation. Painful. And this was in 2024, when show organizers MIGHT have still been able to play ignorant about this stuff. Hearing that the AI scammers multiplied in 2025 made me glad I didn’t go, and may never go again. 😕 These pop culture expos are just overwhelming now anyway, with TOO MANY equally talented REAL artists competing with each other AND with these AI scumbags for a tiny slice of the pie. So much hustle for so little. In 2023, I wrapped up a 35+ year career as a graphic designer and occasional illustrator / cartoonist – professionally employed at seven different media companies, publishing houses, agencies, etc – and it couldn’t have happened at a better time. NOT ONCE in my career from approx. 1987 to 2023, did I EVER have to record a process video or any kind of proof that I was using my own skills. I know that artists today have no other choice but to waste even more precious time on stuff like this, and it’s heartbreaking, really. From the moment art and design ‘went digital’, we’ve been setting ourselves up for this day, feeding the beast by utilizing all these amazing digital tools and giving AI untold galaxies of content to train on. If I had kids wanting to go into the arts professionally, I’d probably push them away from it. My three-decade career absolutely could not happen now. 😔
