I received my PhD in CompSci in 1987 with a specialization in AI (yes, we were working on it even back then). At the time, all the AI experts were saying that (1) C3P0 in Star Wars was impossible and (2) we wouldn't have AGI in 100 years. Now, less than 40 years later we're talking about AGI in the next 2-5 years, if not sooner. What changed? Computer processing power with microprocessors running at a "blinding" 16 MHz and 20 MHz then (they run at 1-2 GHz now), as well as an explosion of cheap memory. Good luck to anyone under 70.
