i don't think ai will ever be conscious, as any future ai will still work like simpler ai's work now: predicting. scanning through tons of information and text to accurately predict what the next word will be based on that information. sure, it will get better, and eventually probably even better than us, but it is still just numbers and code. if a machine will tell you it is conscious that's because it will predict that is what it needs to say if it was a conscious machine. i don't think consciousness is numbers and math only - i think it has obvious connections to organic life, i don't think you can separate the two. and that's just for consciousness; of course it can never feel, as it's just metal and electricity, and it doesn't have any nervous system. but maybe even more importantly, i don't think we SHOULD believe ai is conscious, regardless if it is or not. we'll probably never know what consciousness is, so we will probably never be able to confirm if ai is conscious or not, but believing it is, is pointless - it will just make everything more complicated. because now we have to give ai rights and acknowledge its existence. so why?? i think assuming consciousness is related to organic life is a pretty basic claim and a basis for everything we believe. we are organic matter; we know we feel things, we have no reason to believe other things can feel things. the claim is baseless. and no, it's not like animals, because we assume\know animals are conscious and sentient, and animals are organic matter as well.
