I have in my hands an olive branch for any of you AI Fans who might be hatescrolling through the comments searching for validation. I understand why you are uncomfortable making your own art. I have heard you speak. You have told me that you are scared of being judged for being bad. You have told me that you cannot afford to practice. You have told me that you are frustrated by the costs of commissions. I want to validate all those feelings. But now that I've lured you in with honeyed words of validation, I must confess to you that I still disagree with your use of Generative AI, and I won't appeal to the artist's feelings (which are also valid) or to simply calling you a thief. You are depriving yourself, though. The artistic process is something you seem to have misunderstood. After hundreds of conversations, not once have I interacted with a Generative AI fan who seemed to see art as anything more than "homework." And I must request, humbly, that you reconsider this. Art is not something you make to be paid. The reason artists with careers in art are successful is a product of their passion and skill having built over time, but they did not sprout from the ground already bearing fruit! Behind all the successful artists you envy there is a mountain of garbage they have created, and I am certain LavenderTowne would agree that her work has not always been up to her own standards. It may yet still not be. Being an Artist means making garbage over and over and over again, and that's not just okay, it's expected. Nobody is going to condemn you for making bad art yourself. In fact, people will applaud your bad art to stoke the fires of your passions. Moreso today than ever. Capitalism robs us all of our ability to recognize anything as worthwhile when it isn't generating profit. It has confused our very souls and misled us into believing the purpose of art is commerce, when it has always been about human connection. Soul-to-soul. If you're into spirituality, Art is a divine gift that lets us know we are human. So I am here. I am resisting my impulse to mock you. I am reaching out, as a human, in my own artistic medium: text, to try and touch you. I want you to understand me, as I have tried so hard to understand you. I want you to know that it's okay. That what makes your art special and beautiful is that it comes from you. Not a machine. Not a program. But YOU. Every crappy stick figure you start with is better than the most complex AI product, and this is because YOU made it. It speaks to who YOU are. That's why people like art to begin with. So start making garbage yourself. I encourage you. Take critique. Build your craft, your temple, and you will see it rise brick by brick, skill by skill, beneath you as it elevates. Humans can have transcendental experiences. Art is how. But Generative AI can't accomplish that because it isn't human. It doesn't have the ability to imbue its soul, or your soul, into art. Only YOU can do that.
