Society has long been efficient enough to support those who do not work, but we have a societal resentment of those people, and see them as lazy, undeserving, scroungers...

The reality will be, those who control AI wanting to hoard resources rather than see them squandered on the unemployed.
Democracy and having to share wealth has long frustrated the powerful. It has only survived this long as a spur to capitalism because liberated workers worked harder, were more creative, and kept their societies ahead of authoritarian societies.
With no need for efficient people, there is no need for democracy. We can look forward to whatever our AI controlling overlords have in store for us 😢
