I'm a disabled programmer, writer, designer, and artist with about a decade of experience in these fields. I used to work with AI for a very long time, and it means something else entirely post-2023 compared to pre-2023. I genuinely believe AI has a bunch of uses and applications that could be beneficial to human society and ease daily life. It can be an asset and a tool, and sure, it can be misused, but so can any tool.
To me, the value in AI lies in making the human process easier, faster, or more efficient—in testing stuff, in finding information in excruciatingly large amounts of data, in reading poorly or not at all described code quickly and telling me what's happening, in spell and grammar checking, in combining fed data and structuring it in a specific manner, in simulations and algorithms, and in reading files that are hard for humans and translating them into something more digestible, such as crash logs or whatever.
To me, that's what AI should be focusing on. I don't see the value in image generation for art, as art requires something AI will never have. Sure, I get the butter hands meme, and that's totally a use I can get behind, as I know for a fact my friends are that stupid. But when it comes to something you'd commission an artist for? I don't ever see AI supplying that demand. It's simply not feasible; it's preposterous.
I even believe chat AI can assist in the creative process when it comes to brainstorming ideas—when you, as the human in the relationship, constantly add, change, edit, ask, choose what, how, and when you're going to use something, even if it's just an inspiration for an idea of your own. Someone to run an idea by and simulate a conversation even.
Just as AI image generation and AI image poisoning developed, so will AI image generation detection and poisoning detection. And sure, the investors only want their money, but this technology is not going to die. Too much money was poured into it for it to just go away forever without accomplishing anything or turning into something else. But I don't see the value in what it's trying to do now, nor do I get the artist fear that it will replace us or whatever (keep poisoning though, it's funny as hell).
In the 1980s, people believed that flying cars would be commonplace by now. The idea that human-like robots will be among us in the near future is just as ridiculous, if not more. The whole thing is terribly overhyped. Look at the sci-fi novels and movies written in the past about the era we're in now—it sure gives you an interesting perspective.
