The more i studied GPTs, the more i came to realize that "expensive autocomplete" is just an primitive explanation for layman.
The truth is, GPTs are _trained_ to predict next word, but it doesn't mean it's the only thing they can do. If they have to understand the complex logic in order to better predict words, they will do it too.
GPT2 was taught manually about how to extract meaning from sentences and make logical judgments. But for GPT 3 and 4, what the hell did they learned we have no idea, but it's certainly something even fancier.
TL;DR: It's true that you don't need to understand if you just follow complex enough rules; but it's also true that even the simplest tasks may have strong intelligence behind them in order to achieve better performance.
