although i don't like ai "art" and for normal things i don't think it makes sense to use it as a reference, i think for oddly specific things/scenarios that you can't find a proper reference for it could be helpful. although like you said, the details are atrocious, if you wanted to visualize something specific like say, a gothic abandoned church on another planet or something, using ai generated images for reference could definitely be helpful, especially if you're someone like me with mild or even severe aphantasia who struggles to imagine images in their head.
