I really am bothered by the communication on this topic, which is miselading even today. Even last year I was interviewed for a PhD position in AI and I was appalled how close minded the professor was. It was just like he wanted his robot to perform some kind of one time show to impress people, even though I didn't see his research being any relevant to making an autonomous robot that you can entrust with real people interaction "in the wild". As a sidenote, the professor was close to retirement and it felt like he just didn't want to take any risk for the end of his career. I have a specific view on what a PhD should be and it definitely does not involve following a master plan without even having the choice to explore the subject. If the only thing they expect of you is some performance that leads to an impressive product, then this is engineering. I know, by my standards, many PhD positions are just low wage engineering positions.
