Honestly, Deepfake is a *huge* problem, perpetuated by the fact that it's open source. The only 'benefit' to it being available to everyone is that we're all kind of aware that it exists, and theoretically, can realize when something *is* deepfaked... but as you pointed out, the technology has only improved over the years (again, because it's open source and anyone can improve on it) - and the videos it produces can be scarily convincing. I don't know what the answer is; the genie's out of the bottle, so I don't think you'd be able to shut down every instance of Deepfake that is out there. But on the other hand, closing down telegram would only cause them to move to the next best program for this. (Not sure what that would be, but given the necessity of a place like telegram for journalists and whistleblowers, I doubt it's the only option out there.) But this, unfortunately, doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I remember a decade ago (fuck, I feel old) people were warning girls not to send explicit photos to their boyfriends or other guys - because guys were doing similar shit on sites like craigslist, just with photos they were actually sent - or they stole from victim's phones/private accounts. This is just the escalation of that. -_-
