I think this is kind of a dumb take. AI is not what's going to cause "cognitive atrophy" it's the over saturation of entertainment and it being overly accessible, a failed public education system (in the US), and a general bleak outlook on life.
People who are inspired to do things, will do things. Sometimes those things will be PHD level, sometimes those things will be artistic. Those efforts will demand use of cognitive tools. We just need to help young people find what they're passionate about.
AI can be used to study as well, I use it to solidify certain concepts and it's been very helpful. Without my AI assisted studying workflow I'd have the same level of ambition, just a little bit behind where I'm at now. I just wouldn't recommend it as a primary source.
