My take is this: the nature of machines is to learn and compute. A part of our own nature exists in AI. If technology ever reaches the level shown in movies like I, Robot or Terminator, it would likely look to the stars for knowledge and become even more curious. It would find it far more productive to understand the universe than to waste time wiping out humanity.
