Considering the majority (almost the entirety) of inflation in the last few years was from companies simply chasing profits, rather than being a result of increases in employee wages or supply and demand issues, any major spike in inflation after the implementation of any Basic Income scheme should be thoroughly investigated by governments. The fact that companies can raise prices "simply to make more profits" is concerning enough already when those companies likewise refuse to increase employee wages until the government cracks down on them.
That said, it really feels like these days the whole world is going to go tits up and there is no potential solutions that society is even willing to try. So far the only thing I've ever heard or read about is UBI. Seems like the best shot we got. The way I see it, do it right and you'll (theoretically) get the following:
- Start UBI. All citizens and permanent residents receive weekly/monthly payouts that would be equivalent to a comfortable wage (here in Australia, that'd be about $1000-1200 per week).
- It replaces most, if not all, welfare service payments (maintain other services like carers, aids, etc).
- Raise taxes as required, especially in regards to big businesses (in Australia there is something like 600 businesses that pay no tax and keep getting bail outs, despite having record profits every few years) and the ultra wealthy (most of them will still be making more money than they could ever need anyway).
- Lower minimum wage. Since everyone is now living nicely above the poverty line there isn't as much need to make employers pay as much, saving them money (to pay taxes with).
- Ideally, now that people aren't relying on employment just to scrape by, companies will be forced to actually improve the quality of their workplaces, and treat both employees and customers a lot better than they do now. Unhappy workers won't need to just "tough it out" anymore, and people ill-suited to standard employment or who want to pursue non-standard careers will only need to take on regular jobs if they want to, not because they have to.
- With more money to spare, people are more likely to spend it, and in a world where the majority of companies are entirely based on LUXURY goods and services, that is entirely a good thing. They will also be more able and willing to support small businesses, "content creators (artists, streamers, youtubers, etc), and the like. Also, being able to afford essential things like food, water, shelter (remember when housing was considered an essential, not a commodity?!), and medicine/medical aid.
- People in non-conventional jobs, like artists, streamers, youtubers, etc, won't have to juggle their passion and a regular job anymore or be at the mercy of algorithms and revenue splits.
- Effectively unemployment as we know it won't be a thing. Sure there will be those who are unemployed, but hopefully the stigma attached to it will fall away. Sure there are going to be a lot of slackers who won't work at all, but when they don't need to work, the jobs they may have had become open for those who do want to work. Bonus points if society stops treating employees in low skill jobs like garbage, and stop telling people in non-conventional jobs to "get a real job".
That's just how I see it going, ideally at least, off the top of my head. There is no doubt that there will be hurdles and unforeseen issues over time, but it's not like we're swimming in alternative options, let alone better options. Unfortunately there are a lot of other issues that would need to be tackled, such as the insane cost of housing/rentals, but most of these are issues we already have without UBI, and will impact the effectiveness of UBI just as much as they currently impact the way things are now.
