What will make or break AI in Art is the perception of value issue. I think a lot of the pro AI advocates think of value as an intrinsic quality that resides in the work itself, so their point is that good art is good art no matter how it was made. But this view overlooks the fact that the concept of 'value' is an entirely human construct. In the world before humans there was no 'value'- only plants and animals and rocks and clouds- but none of these had more 'value' than the other. So value is always and only what humans decide it is- there is no such thing as intrinsic value independent of human perspectives. As a result if the common consensus should be that AI generated creations have no value then this is a self fulfilling proposition because value is what we say it is. At present there seems to be a general drift toward the view that AI content is 'Slop' a meme that has two aspects- high volume combined with low value. Ironically the people developing the technology are not helping it's percived value because their aims are not the same as their users aims. For the developers it makes sense to stress the speed and ease of use their products provide- but these very 'virtues' are reinforceing the common feeling that the outputs are low value- after all who really wants art that is sold as being quick and effortless to make? So there's this basic problem with the very idea of AI generated Art because the value of any work of art is derived from the degree of human effort and ingenuity that went into it's creation- so a 'work of art' that was quick and effortless to make, that requried little or no human effort or ingenuity is almost an oxymoron- like the concept of 'Non Stick Glue' it negates itself even as it asserts itself. At present there is a kind of cultural war going on between the advocates of the 'intrinsic value' school, who insist that process does not matter, only outcomes, and their opponents who argue that without process, without human effort, no artistic value can be created. It will be upon the outcome of this culture war that the future of AI content will be decided.
