Human eyes inherently have superior dynamic range when compared to even the best vision sensors that are commercially available. This allows for timely detection of key visual information in the shadows for example. It is not unreasonable to speculate that dynamic range limitations may have played a part in this unfortunate accident in 2019. It should be noted that the sensors used in the current iteration of FSD have improved in this regard.
From a business perspective, outfitting a car with LiDAR, Radar, and vision sensors would currently be prohibitively expensive for a typical consumer but may make financial sense from a return on assets perspective for a taxi service that is operating 24/7. This is Tesla's dilemma as it is trying to serve both consumer and commercial markets with the same technology while Waymo for example is focusing on one market.
